Hi Mary,

I was just passing through this web site and saw your comment. Not sure if there is another elementary school near the plains? We were offered a choice of 2 special ed classrooms elkton and grottos. One had by far better a better mix of peers for my son, more talking children, less behaviors etc. Only glitch was I had to provide transportation. If another school isn't possible, try calling or emailing the Virginia Autism Resource Center (www.varc.org)out of Winchester. They send someone out for free and they have lots of experience and work with the schools to set up something appropriate for your child, based on their unique needs. If specific goals can be made in an IEP, that can't be served by your child's classroom staff, than Anna needs an aide to herself.

How did the school do with the IEP goals of last year? If you can prove they didn't meet their goals, then you would have more reason to suggest an aide. Problem that I see with programs is that data is needed often to prove that they are actually progressing. That's why we decided to do the "ABA" route. Now he is transitioning to McGaheysville Elem, with an aide, but does have some good skills under his belt.

Hope this helps.

Missy
